Self-care is about calming your mind and your body, fulfilling your needs and wants.

Whole Body, Mind and Soul Self-Care

Physical

You hear exercise helps release those feel good hormones, endorphins. You may be thinking that exercising never sounds good and definitely is the last thing you want to do to relax.  But it doesn’t have to be going to the gym. Just moving, going for a walk, dancing, something that you actually enjoy doing. It’ll give you more energy and a sense of accomplishment. It is nice sitting on the couch and doing nothing, don’t get me wrong! But, after while I start to feel groggy and blah. How about you?

Spiritual

One of the most important step in self-care is your spirituality. I’m not talking about religion, although if you are religious that’s great too. But, this is within yourself, your soul. This is about focusing on your energy, your thoughts, and your positivity. Calming your thoughts, and the energy around you, you can feel like a whole new person. Meditating is a great way. Read books, listen to podcasts or dvds to learn about meditation and how to do it. One of my favorite things to do is burn incense, or sage. Sagebrush is a shrub and it is known to help uplift the energy around you, relieving your stress and clearing your mind. Intellectual

Well, you have heard of mom brain right? Yes, it’s a real thing, which explains a lot with me. ?  But, another important type of self-care is your intellectual self-care. On top of mom brain, most of your conversations are with your baby, sometimes we may feel like we need some kind of challenge or an intellectual reboot. I know it’s hard to find time to read, but even if it’s just for 10 minutes, pick up your favorite book and read. Instead of browsing on social media, read a book on your device, phone or tablet.   Stimulate your mind anyway you like. Learn something new, go to a museum, explore nature as a family. There are tons of ways to to intellectual self-care and clear your mind to let it grow.

Social

I know this word can be scary. I’m a total introvert and the last thing I want to do is socialize. Good news, you don’t really have to! When I talk about this type of self-care, I’m talking about getting out of the house, and explore beyond the walls. This can be something like having coffee or dinner with a close friend or relative. Taking a pottery class or cooking class. These things can be done by yourself, with your kids, spouse, whoever you want. The point is to get up and out. I know it is hard to get going. The thought of having to get ready, is so much work. But, trust me in the end you will be so happy you did. You need that change of scenery. You can’t be a robot and cater to everyone whether you’re a stay at home mom, or working mom. You need to break free. 

Emotional

Then finally, the last type of self-care, emotional. This is pretty much the reason for self-care, getting your emotions out, it’s not good to keep them bottled up inside. You’re a mom, you are pretty much a therapist. You try to solve you child’s problems, probably try to solve your co-workers problems, your spouses problems. Now, it’s time to let it all out.  You can go cry, laugh, go to a high mountain and scream. Go to those destruction places and destroy things. They actually have those. You go to wherever it is, some times they have a room full of glass things and you can just bash them with a baseball bat. Sounds therapeutic doesn’t it? If that’s how you need to get your frustration out, your emotions out, then so be it. Whatever it is, however you need to do it, do it!
